Just back from the Glasgow leadership hustings and it does make a refreshing change as a Labour Party member to be involved in an election.
The speeches from the three leadership candidates were decent enough whatever you think about their respective policy differences. If their was one clear message coming from all three candidates it was that change is on the agenda. Change towards centre-left social democracy , or even centrist social democracy, would be nice after New Labour , but we shall see.
The deputy candidate speeches were more the type of thing that can inspire and galvanise a political party. Both Bill Butler and Johann Lamont seemed more relaxed and in their element. They also both talked about the importance of the Deputy Leader both looking at how policy is formed and making sure the voice of ordinary party members is heard by the leadership.
If I had to make a judgement about performance I'd say Jamieson just edged Kerr with Gray a fair bit behind, and a score draw going into extra time between Butler and Lamont, with Butler winning on penalties. I am of course biased.

Well, the Labour lot need change! (Not intended as negative). From a variety of news reports, their websites and bits and bobs of blogs, I'd go for Jamieson.
I always end up remembering the stupid things - but as far as I can tell, she didn't jump up in disgust at Salmond's Thatcher comments. Which is good, because both Kerr and Gray went at him and it's all fairly negative.
I'm not of any particular political persuation, and just found this blog at chance when perusing other Scottish Politics blogs, but I think Labour need Jamieson to take them forwards a bit. I'm immediately disturbed by Gray's love-in with Westminster - it'll only hinder progress in Scotland (and I'm a bit of a Unionist!)
You reckon Butler is the Man City of the Deputy Leadership contest? [Today's Uefa Cup game] I've not read into the Deputy stuff much, so I shan't comment. I do support Man City though.
Interesting that Gray is back in 3rd on the speeches front given he is emerging as the overall favourite.
Maybe he is successfully papering over the cracks in his campaign but, if was to win, would he step up and find some presentational skills?
Difficult question to answer I guess....
